FORMAT:  Lecture/Discussion

The tidewater areas of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware have provided, from the 17th century on, some of this country’s finest examples of American architectural styles.  They have also developed vernacular styles of their own that are still being built today.  This survey covers the major styles of domestic architecture from the late 17th to the mid 20th centuries.  Also included are changes in domestic landscapes and outbuildings.  While emphasis is placed on the evolution of style and setting, there will be “before and after” examples of successful preservation.

Bayly Janson-La Palme is Professor Emerita at Catonsville Community College.  She has lectured and published widely in Maryland history.
