From 1800 to the present the Western powers and their philosophies have dominated the world, leaving the U.S., in 2007, the world’s undisputed major power.  Can we take lessons from the past to inform our actions today?  Are we making progress?  Or, is history merely circular?


Week One: Nationalism, Imperialism and Resistance

Week Two: Rise and Fall of the British Empire

Week Three: Japan.  Its isolation and Emergence

Week Four: Revolution in China

Week Five: New nations emerge during the Cold War

Week Six: Full Circle?  The Rise of China and India


Charlotte Staelin (History Ph.D. University of Michigan, 1977) has taught many semesters of World History to undergraduates and now loves to discuss world events with more mature students.
